<image:caption>The Night Owl A multimedia artist/father/husband and creator of ‘Night Owls Only.’ Located out of Youngstown, Ohio, Justin is known for a continuous portfolio of diverse works in mediums ranging from watercolor to body art. Specializing in black and gray work with a message of social justice and burning the midnight oil. “I hope to inspire the mind of change and alter the perspective on what is possible through adverse conditions. My artwork is themed of old cartoon classics and times where the lack of world understanding as a child was infinitely more blissful and provided a clearer path to imagination. Influenced by old school animators turned entrepreneurs and world changers like Theodor Seuss, Shel Silverstein, and of course Walt Disney.” (Tap the Image to take a better look!)</image:caption>

<image:caption>Nugget NUGGET is a multidisciplinary artist, arts advocate, and art entrepreneur. She graduated from UNC Wilmington, owns and operates 11oh9 Gallery, and passionately provides a platform via www.11oh9gallery.com for her fellow creatives to bring their work to the global online market. She is known for her large scale mural work and unapologetically living her truth. Her contribution was inspired by Minnie Evans, a fellow Wilmington native, who created the work that is first in her memory to draw her into the world of art. She still is fascinated with her imagination and/or divine inspiration. (Tap the Image to take a better look!)</image:caption>

<image:title>Meet the artists - K - African Sunset</image:title>
<image:caption>Kimberly Smith Growing up surrounded by many talents (musicians, painters, jacks of all trades), I am driven by inspiration and challenges. At a young age, I loved to draw, but only recently embraced a passion for painting, something my grandfather was particularly talented in. In 2020, with the many unnecessary murders of innocent African Americans across the country, I found myself overwhelmingly saddened and frustrated. It was clear the importance of getting involved to bring awareness of the racism that still continues against people of color. Soon after, I stumbled across Eighteen Forward's mission on the day of the art proposal deadline and was so grateful to be given the opportunity to display my piece on the letter 'K'. With so much history in Wilmington, NC, this contribution is to remind our community how far we've come, and as the African sunset will always fall to the West towards the beautiful city of Wilmington, love too will never fail to prevail. Mr. Davis teaches middle and high school art for GLOW Academy. His background has always been in youth advocacy and development, so he integrates many skills into his instruction. <image:title>Meet the artists - V - The Origin</image:title>
<image:caption>Conscious Scents Luckia was born in Brooklyn, NY to a mother who had many artistic talents including sewing, upholstery, and the freestyling abilities to take what many would perceive as nothing, create something and make it her own. She had a father who, though deceased prior to her birth, left behind his intricate, beloved passion of music and his futuristic ways of recreating electronics. With her mother and father now being her guardian angels, she allows their aspirations to be her inspiration for every creation. Since she was old enough to hold a pencil within her hand, Luckia has been a creator! Creating has always been second nature to Luckia and a much needed outlook for expression. As a highschooler, the many racial adversities she faced pushed her to focus on art even more than ever before. Exposed to many different mediums whether they were pottery, painting (acrylics or oil), building sculptures, paper mache, murals or photography, her passions only intensified. These challenges taught her that art can be the light to any darkness. Luckia graduated from Topsail High School being the only student who took an independent art course created just for her after she conquered every art class the school offered. It was there she learned bringing out the beauty in nature and people is her happy place. Creating gives her purpose. Creating gives her life. Creating gives her passions the right to create the pathway to her destiny! Luckia is the founder of Conscious Scents LLC, a company which provides multiple products inspired by nature and its beauty. Conscious Scents candles are each graced by the founder’s original artwork and positive wording, infused with essential oils, and are based on innovative plant-based wax. Conscious Scents is consciously replacing darkness one candle at a time! (Tap the Image to take a better look!)</image:caption>

<image:caption>Harvest Ganong Harvest is a Wilmington, North Carolina based artist. While using a variety of mediums and styles throughout her career as a sculptor and painter, she seems to always be highly influenced by the human figure. Through the human figure she is able to not only have the viewer reflect on themselves, but also appreciate the true and simple beauty of the human form. While obtaining her Bachelor Degree of Fine Arts (BFA) from Western Carolina University with a concentration of sculpture, she became influenced with the works of Louise Bourgeois, Kiki Smith, and Magdalena Abakanowicz, unapologetic female sculptors that dove into the unconventional form of the human body, which sparked the path for Harvest Ganong. Since then she has contributed to the Nina Hole fire sculpture located on the Appalachian State University Campus, art exhibits in the Wedge Gallery in Asheville NC, as well as the Calico Room Wilmington NC and several of the local restaurants. More recently, she has created collage portraits of famous people using non recyclable plastics. Her work will be featured by the UNCW Just US Project and used for a curriculum impacting K-12 students. (Tap the Image to take a better look!)</image:caption>

<image:caption>Kate Danford Kate was born and raised in High Point, NC. She attended Elon for two years where she majored in partying before relocating to Wilmington, NC. According to Kate, “I immediately loved living close to the beach and close enough to my grandparents to eat well and do my laundry.” She continued her studies online at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh where she studied art and graphic design. Now, Kate is a manager at The UPS Store by day and painting by night. The artwork for the letter "S" was inspired by the history of Seabreeze, a beach resort near Carolina Beach open to African Americans that was also owned by African Americans. The Carolina Beach police wouldn't allow black people to drive through the community, so they had to take ferries to get across. From the 1920s-60s, Seabreeze thrived with multiple hotels, "juke joints," and beach cottages. (Tap the Image to take a better look!)</image:caption>

<image:caption>Damali Love Vallier Damali was born in Durham NC. As a self taught artist, Damali has always loved art since childhood. Damali states, “I used to draw mostly as a child, and as a young adult I became more interested in painting. Painting is like therapy to me. It's like a peaceful place to release all my deepest thoughts onto a canvas.“ “Painting this piece/letter "M" has made me think about what's going on in the world. And even with all that's going on I'm still able to smile and hopefully make others smile. I titled it, 'Where Is Peace On Earth" because that's what this world needs, but most of us don't know how to find it.” (Tap the Image to take a better look!)</image:caption>

Its impact can be observed in her "Say It Loud" street mural located on Lindsay Street in Greensboro, as well as the local "Black Lives Matter" exhibition. She is inspired by her mother, aunt and late grandfather who have created using many forms of mixed media. Her love for people and nature makes her passionate about creating functional art. Her work can be found in rock displays at Castle Hayne Elementary School in Wilmington, NC, Washington Montessori Elementary School, and multiple homes even as far as London, Jamaica, and Rome. Schala resides in Wilmington with her husband Ken and two children, Caleb, Saydee and their wonderful dog Major. Shala stated, “Art has always been a passion of mine. Every summer, my Grandma would have a special craft set up during my visit. We would draw with pastels, paint with acrylics, and make stuffed animals. I was a jack of all trades. To this day, I still love creating. I think it is important to use someone’s gift to make the world a better place. I like to use my art to spread a message or emotion that is meaningful. I like to make people think. Make people see something in a different light that maybe they didn’t see before. I think it is important to empower each other and show love for each other. It is important to speak up, stand up, educate ourselves and take action.” _______________________________________ Schala describes her “Say It Loud” quilt painting of Black culture in detail. 1. The clapperboard represents my culture in full. 5 plus 3 plus 1 equals nine.Galatians 5:22-23 has 9 fruits of the spirit ( love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self- control) 2. Adinkra symbol from Ghanaian culture called the Duafe (the comb) represents our beauty, femininity, love, care, good hygiene and being well groomed, also shows our adornment for our natural coils and tresses. 3. Eye of Horus ancient hieroglyphic Egyptian symbol of protection, restoration, royal power, and good health. 4. I love HBCUs ... historic black colleges and universities.. specifically NCA&T, my alumni founded in 1891 originally named Agricultural and Mechanical College as a result of the Second Morrill Act, in 1890 when Congress mandated separate colleges for the "colored race". 5. The tape deck...honoring hip hop the 80s 90s and so on..our poetic sound..we are "lyrical lyricist flowing lyrics out my larynx" (-Notorious B.I.G Smalls)..its the love of beats, rhyme and birth to hip hop and spoken word 6. The sun..a powerful source of energy that shows all of the beautiful variations of our cultures color and complexion...our melanin provides pigmentation to our hair, skin and eyes, it helps to protect us from harmful UV rays yet it gives such great energy by boosting serotonin in our brains for increased energy. 7. The Divine 9. Historically black Greek Letter Organization (BGLOs) that make up the National Pan-Hellenic Council. These colors blended into each other represent the brother and sisterhood of the fraternities and sororities as they all provide support and love for each other, their communities, universities and people as a whole. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Sigma Gamma Rho, Iota Phi Theta Fraternity. 8. The dancer. We tell stories through dance, we create steps that are copied all over the world, have a natural rhythm and movement, each angle wordlessly tells our history, captivates and touches every single emotion. 9. An Adinkra symbol/Ghanian symbolizes the power of love. My husband and I got this one anniversary to represent that love never fails. It reads "ODO NNYEW FIE KWAN" meaning those who lead by love will never lose their way...therefore we should Do everything in love. #spreadlove 10. The Ankh. Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphic symbol symbolizing the key of life or the key of the Nile—its representative of eternal life in Ancient Egypt. It's shape is of a woman's fallopian tubes and womb/ reproduction system ..bearer of all...giver of life 180 plus 180 = 360 degrees...completion, life 11. Sankofa Heart...another Adinkra/Ghanaian symbol...means to retrieve, to go back and get, seek, take or go back and get it...what you've lost. The symbol is either a stylized heart or more commonly a bird with its head turned backwards. 12. VOTE.. removing the idea of the electoral college, gentrification, racial profiling, civility, equality, equity...making laws that protect us! 13. The Crown...The Woman King..We are Kings and Queens, Royal, Natural born Leaders ..our crowns are full of knowledge, life, wisdom and rich in history...we must protect our roots, become unified, remove the idea of being bound by our oppressors by repeating the oppressors mentality towards our people, have honor, respect and a free mind. 14. Faith. Our Hope, Love, Trust and Faith comes from God. Our faith speaks the language of the heart and expresses hope beyond our conscious mind. Faith is to believe in yourself and allow God to work through you. "Walk by faith, not sight" 15. Cheetah print is a sign of speed, agility, keen insight and a sense of freedom and an undomesticated spirit open to infinite possibilities. 16. Our DNA is royal, loyal, colorful, loving, unbreakable and undeniable. The original bearer of life, The Eve Gene 17. The Black family circle is not broken, not uneducated, not to be pushed to the side, is equally powerful and is strong. (Tap the Image to take a better look!)</image:caption>

<image:title>Meet the artists - T - Rachel Freeman School of Engineering</image:title>
<image:caption>Lead Teachers: Lindsey Williams: Special Education Teacher and Marsha Revels: Art Teacher This piece was composed by the students and staff of Rachel Freeman School of Engineering. Rachel Freeman School of Engineering is named after a Wilmington Activist who was passionate about eliminating racism and empowering women in her community. A former member of the New Hanover County Board of Education, Rachel Freeman fought relentlessly to improve educational opportunities for Wilmington students, ensuring equitable access to a quality education for Black and white students in Wilmington. Rachel Freeman continued her activism in Wilmington despite her diagnosis of Sarcoidosis, a chronic illness that impacted her eyesight and ability to walk. Her resilience in the face of challenges and opposition is embodied in the students and staff of Rachel Freeman School of Engineering to this day. Freeman students and families painted stars and names onto this piece of art. In this important moment in our nation's history, our students can make an impact by using their voices to advocate for change in their community. Freeman staff also added stars to show that we stand with our students and families in the fight to make Wilmington a safer, more equal city. The staff of Rachel Freeman School of Engineering stands with Wilmington's Black community, and together this work of art demonstrates the declaration that the lives of our Black students and their families matter to our city. Their views, dreams and ideas are critical to the development of a more inclusive, equal Wilmington. As Freeman teachers, we acknowledge the painful legacy of racism passed down through Wilmington's history, and our important role as educators to confront it. We want to take this opportunity to provide our students with a safe and healthy opportunity for civic engagement and self-expression, and pair it with a visual reminder that we will protect, celebrate and nurture the young Black lives that walk into our school. As Wilmington teachers, we commit to educating the next generation about Wilmington's true history, celebrating our Black students and working to dispel racism wherever it emerges in our community. <image:title>Meet the artists - E - Emphasize Equality</image:title>
<image:caption>Ryan Camden Ryan Camden was born in Jesup, GA in 1993. Having grown up both next to the sea and in close proximity to Savannah, GA, his love of the outdoors and architecture grew tremendously. Throughout his life, Ryan has always been fascinated by images and how the world is represented through the eyes of others. Naturally, he was drawn to painting. This interest was cultivated during his teenage years and further developed when he spent summers camping. After completing his studies, Ryan delved even more into public pieces, which involved making art more accessible to the community. This is what drew him to this art installation. It had a strong message and created a moment for the community to celebrate and share. The inspiration for the art installation came from a feeling of change. This project stood out against the noise of everything else. Its message was simple, straightforward, and inspiring. With hesitation to share his views in the current state of society, Ryan knew something was not right and that silence was dangerous. He spent time researching the history of Wilmington and creating a thoughtful mural design. The design for the “E” highlights Black excellence and the remarkable history of so many in Wilmington. Ryan was an artist, but had never painted a mural before. This was his mural debut and it was a challenge he welcomed and embraced. Through this entire process, Ryan felt a connection to his community that he had never known. Lifting the voices of great people that made Wilmington iconic pushed the design farther than he could have envisioned. He hopes that when you see this mural you see a united community, built on love and compassion. And please, support what really matters. Ryan is also a real estate broker, specializing in short term rentals and investment properties. Ryan lives and works in Wilmington, surrounded by the sea and the city that he loves. He still continues to create pieces of art that inspire change and honors the beauty around us. (Tap the Image to take a better look!)</image:caption>
